The difference between a public or private pregnancy journey.
Private patient in a public or private hospital
You have the option of choosing your Obstetrician and the hospital you want to deliver in. You need to have Gold Hospital cover with Pregnancy and Birth included to claim any benefits for in-hospital services received in relation to your pregnancy, birth and delivery.1
A 12-month waiting period applies to Pregnancy and Birth once you sign up or change your Hospital cover to include this.
Public patient in a public hospital
Hospital cover for Pregnancy and Birth won't be required because these services are funded by the public hospital system.
There are no waiting periods if you are a public patient however you may not be able to choose your Obstetrician or receive care from the same doctor throughout your pregnancy journey.
Choosing to have your baby as a public patient means you usually have your baby in the public Hospital closest to where you live.
Why do some choose a private pregnancy journey?
Choice of doctor and hospital
With Gold Hospital cover, you will have the option of choosing your own Obstetrician and the Hospital you want to deliver in. Having the same Obstetrician means you'll see them at every visit and they'll get to know you during your pregnancy journey.%
Own room
If you value privacy, Private Hospital cover can help provide the comfort and privacy of your own room in a Private Hospital.*

Your extras cover can help pay towards physiotherapy consultations and hydrotherapy sessions that could help relieve the pain or assist with other pregnancy-related complications you may experience.%
Healthy gums
Hormonal changes may make you more prone to gum disease. Seeing your dentist regularly can help to catch any problems early before they start causing more serious issues.%
Remedial massage
Remedial massage may help manage back pain, nerve pain and plays an important role in relieving physical and emotional stress. Your extras cover can help pay benefits towards remedial massage treatments during your pregnancy and beyond.%
