The tooth hurts - 50% of Australians didn't visit the dentist last year
The dentist
New data has found that around half of the population did not visit the dentist in 2022, despite the majority of COVID restrictions easing and dentists resuming normal operations.
Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data, as well as Medibank data, found that around 50% of Australians aged 15 years and over did not visit the dentist in 2022.
Medibank Medical Director, Dr Jessica Choong, said people should be seeing the dentist twice a year for a routine check-up.
“It’s really important that people visit the dentist for a check-up twice a year as good oral hygiene is one of the gateways to overall health.
“Getting regular check-ups can prevent tooth decay and avoid costly dental procedures in the future, as well as contribute to your overall health and wellbeing.
Medibank Group Executive Milosh Milisavljevic encouraged members to make the most of their extras, which includes free dental check-ups twice a year.
“I know that going to the dentist isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but dental check-ups shouldn’t be a financial burden,” he said.
“Our members get 100% back on their dental check-ups twice a year, which makes a really big difference to your household budget, especially when you’ve got a family to look after.
“A family of five can save hundreds of dollars on their dental check-ups.
“Medibank is a firm believer in preventative health measures and visiting the
dentist for a routine check-up is one of the best ways to keep on top of your overall health, not just your oral health.
