    Appointment of new chairman for medibank


    Paul McClintock AO, will retire as Chairman of the Board of Medibank at the end of his second term on 18 March 2013.

    Minister for Finance and Deregulation, Senator Penny Wong, announced today that Elizabeth Alexander AM, current Non-Executive Director will be appointed to the role, becoming the company's first female Chairman.

    Elizabeth Alexander was appointed to the Medibank Board in October 2008 and is currently Chairman of the Human Resources Committee.

    "Elizabeth's appointment ensures a smooth transition for the Board and Medibank, and is a vote of confidence by the Government in our strategy and role in the health system. We look forward to moving into the next phase of Medibank's evolution with Elizabeth," Medibank Managing Director, George Savvides said.

    "I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Paul McClintock for his leadership and achievements during his time at Medibank," Mr Savvides said.

    Paul McClintock was appointed Chairman of Medibank in March 2007 and has led immense change at the organisation. At the time of being appointed, Medibank was focused solely on private health insurance but has since evolved into a fully-fledged health company offering health services and solutions alongside its traditional insurances.

    "Medibank has grown organically and through acquisition during Paul McClintock's six years as Chairman and his expertise has been highly valued through the integrations of Australian Health Management, Health Services Australia, Carepoint and McKesson Asia Pacific," Mr Savvides advised.

    "I have the upmost respect for Paul and his contribution to Medibank. His willingness to share his business knowledge and his support of the Senior Executive team has been invaluable in fulfilling our vision. On behalf of all Board members, I extend my thanks to Paul and acknowledge in particular his leadership and dedication in shaping the organisation into the innovative and distinctive business we are today."

    Ms Alexander is currently Chairman of DEXUS Wholesale Property Limited, a Director of DEXUS Property Group, the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority and IOOF Foundation. She is Chancellor of the University of Melbourne and chairs their Finance Committee. She is the former Chairman of CSL Limited, Chair of the Australia Prudential Regulatory Authority's Risk and Audit Committee, and the Portfolio Audit Committee of the Victoria Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
