No, typically couples pay the equivalent base price of two individual health plans in the same product (before the application of any discount, rebate or loading). Two people in an eligible relationship may choose couples health cover for a variety of reasons, but the main benefit is less administration. There are a number of factors that can affect your premium, so it's best to contact us to discuss.

The main reason two people in an eligible relationship may consider two separate singles cover instead of joint cover is that couples cover requires you to have the same level of cover. If you have different extras habits or one of you wants a higher level of cover, singles cover may be better suited.

You don’t have to be married to take out couples private health insurance. It’s available to people living together in a marital or de facto relationship. 

Holding private health insurance, whether as singles or a couple, may help you avoid the Medicare Levy Surcharge if your combined income is above a certain threshold.

If you’re earning more than $101K as a single, or more than $202K as a couple, or single parent, you could be paying an additional tax surcharge of 1% (or up to 1.5% for higher income brackets) of your income¹, if you don’t hold an appropriate level of private Hospital cover.

If you’re an Australian resident and you don’t have Hospital cover by 1 July following your 31st birthday and choose to take it out later in life you may be subject to paying the Lifetime Health Cover loading. A loading of 2% will be added to your Hospital cover premium for each year you were aged over 30 without it. The maximum loading is 70% and the loading will be removed after 10 years of continuous cover. There are some exceptions and exemptions so be sure to read up before you make any decisions.

If you’re planning to start or grow your family, you may want to select a health insurance policy that includes pregnancy and birth services. These benefits are not exclusive to couples health cover though – they are available on all Gold Hospital covers, including singles health covers. Keep in mind that a 12-month waiting period applies to these services, so it’s wise to plan ahead.
