Single parents health cover is designed for one parent and their dependants. It allows single parents to manage healthcare needs for themselves and their children under one policy. This is a practical choice if you’re the only adult in your household, or the only adult that requires health insurance, and want to ensure your kids have access to private health services.

Single parents health insurance premiums are generally lower than other family covers for certain levels of Hospital and Extras cover.

Your children can generally stay on your health insurance as Child Dependants until they turn 21, or in some cases, as a Student Dependant (eligibility applies) or an Adult Dependant until they turn 31, provided they are not married or in a de facto relationship.

The best health insurance for single parents depends on your family’s unique needs, such as the ages of your children, any ongoing health conditions, and the types of services you’d like access to. You could avoid paying the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) with Hospital cover if you earn more than $101k as a single or $202k as a family, couple or single parent. You could be paying an additional tax surcharge of 1% (up to 1.5% for higher income brackets) of your income, if you or any of your dependants don’t hold an appropriate level of Hospital cover for the full financial year.⁴

The family income threshold for single parents, couples and families is increased by $1,500 for each MLS dependant child after the first child. However, if you and all your dependants⁴ take out Hospital cover and hold it for the full tax year, you may not have to pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge. Any level of Hospital cover will do, so long as the excess is not greater than $750 for singles or $1,500 for couples or families.⁵
