What is Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) Cover?

Total and Permanent Disability Cover is an add-on to Life Cover and provides a lump sum payment if you become totally and permanently disabled, leaving you unable to work in any job you’re suited for. This benefit can provide some financial security to help you access treatments and rehabilitation, and focus on the things that are important to you.

Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) Cover is an add-on to Life Cover and can provide up to $1.5m in cover to you if you're between 18 and 45 when applying. The maximum sum insured is then up to $1m if you're between the ages of 46 and 55 when applying, and up to $500,000 if you're between 56 and 60 when applying. The minimum amount you can be insured for is $50,000 and the maximum age at application is 60. This cover is in addition to your Life Cover, or any other policies you may hold.

What qualifies for Total and Permanent Disability (TPD)?

To apply for TPD Cover, you must be gainfully employed and working a minimum of 20 hours per week at the time of application.

To receive your TPD benefit, you must have suffered a total and permanent disability while your TPD Cover is in place.

A total and permanent disability occurs when you suffer an illness or injury, and after three consecutive months, you're unlikely to work in any occupation that is reasonably suited to you.

If you're not permanently disabled, but suffer a total and irrecoverable loss of use of a single limb, or sight in one eye, you'll receive 25% of your TPD Cover amount.1

For all details on what qualifies for TPD Cover, terms, conditions and exclusions, read the PDS.

Important details of Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) Cover

When won't we pay?

We will not pay any benefit under TPD Cover if the event that led to a total and permanent disability was caused or contributed to by attempted suicide, or any intentional self-inflicted act.

The payment of a TPD benefit is also dependent on following reasonable advice from a medical practitioner.

For all exclusions, terms and conditions, read the PDS.

When does TPD Cover end?

Like Life Cover, TPD Cover will end on the payment of the amount you're covered for, or, the policy anniversary immediately after your 65th birthday. If you cancel your policy, this will also end your cover.

When Life Cover ends, all TPD and Critical Illness Cover will also end. Your TPD Cover will end on whichever event happens earlier.

If your TPD Cover benefit is paid, it will reduce your sum insured for your Life Cover, TPD Cover and if applicable, Critical Illness Cover by the amount paid. If the sum insured reduces to zero, then the cover ends. This will not impact Child Cover policies under your Life Cover.

For all circumstances that will end your TPD Cover, read the PDS.

* First year discount Terms & conditions

Offer starts 12.01am AEDT on 23 October 2024 and ends 11.59pm AEDT on 10 December 2024 (Promotion Period). Customers who purchase a Medibank Life Insurance or Medibank Income Protection policy for the first time (Eligible Policy), either online or over the phone during the Promotion Period will receive a 10% discount (Discount) on the premiums payable during the first 12 months their policy is in force.

The Discount will also apply to any customers who start or resume their application of an Eligible Policy, during the Promotion Period, and then complete the purchase of the same application prior to that application expiring.

Where a customer purchased an Eligible Policy prior to or during the Promotion Period, and then adds additional cover types via a separate application during the Promotion Period (TPD Cover, Critical Illness Cover or Child Cover), the Discount will not apply to these additional cover types.

Where a customer is a Medibank health member, the Discount is in addition to the standard 10% health member discount. The two discounts combined, amount to a total of 20% off the first year's premiums. Medibank health members continue to receive 10% off their premium every subsequent year, for so long as their health membership is maintained. All discounts are applied to the annualised premium amount and before the deduction of all applicable taxes.

The Discount will end on the first policy anniversary date. The period that the Discount applies for will not change or extend despite the use of the Premium and Cover Pause Benefit, or the waiver of premiums in relation to an Income Protection claim (as outlined in the relevant PDS).

All terms and conditions, waiting periods, limitations and exclusions will apply to all cover purchased in accordance with the relevant PDS. We reserve the right to change the Promotion Period of the Discount. The Discount only applies if it is shown on the quote provided when applying. Not available with any other offer except for the Medibank health member discount.
