For family-owned organic fish business This Fish, seafood should be served as it naturally exists in the ocean. That means free of chemicals, hormones and antibiotics, harvested from a clean, natural environment where the fish have plenty of space in fast-flowing waters to swim freely and healthily.
We asked the good people of This Fish to share a little more about the world of organic fish farming.
What are the benefits of organic fish farming?
Australians are eating more fish and other aquatic products than ever before. At the same time wild fish populations worldwide are down and human population is on the rise. Organic aquaculture is one way of addressing the pressing issues of modern life to reduce the dependency on wild fish and keeping the balance in our ecosystem. The aim in organic fish farming is to manage natural resources in such a way that harmful effects on the environment are minimised.
The farming of fish is thought to have started in the Mediterranean region even dating back to ancient Egyptian civilisation. The earliest extensive marine farms in the Etruscan culture (Italy) date back to the 6th century BC. So aquaculture is in no way a recent practice, as viewed by the world community only recently as a potential solution to the dilemma of our depleted oceans.
How did This Fish come to life as a business?
Our director, Steven Kons, has a background in environmental health and is passionate about making a change to restore the balance of our planet while improving human health. Having been in the fish industry (as well as the food manufacturing industry) for many years, he saw great potential in organic aquaculture during his extensive travels. He realised that we need to find workable solutions in a world that needs urgent action to address the issues facing an exploited and degraded ocean.

How do you harvest and prepare your fish, from ocean to plate?
This Fish works with organic fish farms around the world and is proud to be accredited with the NASAA label and other respective international certification bodies. We source from places that offer sustainable, ethical and organic seafood. We have close ties with all farms and visit them regularly to ensure the highest quality of our products and total compliance with the organic standards.
The fish is harvested and frozen fresh within 24 hours and is then shipped to Australia.
We offer organic certified ocean trout, salmon, fish fingers and cooked prawns and are continuously striving to extend our range. A seafood marinara and sea bream fillets will be offered in the next few months. All our products are available in organic stores and organic butchers in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia. We are also extending into independent supermarkets and are opening up into South Australia.
