Dental services
Dental services include general dental, major dental, and orthodontics. It's important for you to understand the difference between them all so that you know what's included in your cover and how to make a claim. The professionals who provide dental services can be dentists, orthodontists and periodontists. To keep things simple, we refer to all of them as "dentists".
It's also important for you to contact us before your treatment so we can check your cover inclusions and discuss your options with you.
Dental services – types and procedures
General dental is a basic level of dental cover that includes routine procedures and also some that might take some recovery time, like tooth extractions. The list includes:
- Examinations – Checking your teeth for cavities and gum disease.
- Preventive treatments – These include dental check-up, clean and polish.
- Scale and clean – Removing plaque and calculus, and cleaning and polishing.
- Extraction – Removing a tooth from its bone socket, i.e. having a tooth pulled out.
- Fillings – Restoring a damaged tooth to its normal function and shape.
- X-rays – To help detect mouth abnormalities invisible to the human eye, like those pesky wisdom teeth causing trouble.
If you’d like to contact us to check how benefits will be paid for a procedure, please make sure you have:
- The item numbers and charges from the dentist for the procedure, and what date you’re anticipating having the treatment. We can also give you a quote if you’re planning on having multiple treatments.
- The provider number for the dentist. This is usually on the quote or any invoice or receipt they’ve provided, and they can also provide it on request. If you don’t have the provider number, have their name and location so we can look it up for you.
Major dental is a higher level of dental cover that includes more complex procedures and treatments. The list includes:
- Endodontic services – Procedures relating to the soft tissue of teeth, like root fillings.
- Periodontics – Treating periodontitis, also known as gum disease.
- Crowns, bridges and dentures
- Major restorative fillings – This includes procedures like inlays and onlays
- Oral appliances for sleep apnoea
Please contact us before having a major dental procedure so that we can advise and guide you on how you’re covered, how to get the best value from your cover, and how to claim.
When you contact us, please make sure you have:
- The item numbers and charges from the dentist for the procedure, and what date you’re anticipating having the treatment. We can also give you a quote if you’re planning on having multiple treatments.
- The provider number for the dentist. This is usually on the quote or any invoice or receipt they’ve provided, and they can also provide it on request. If you don’t have the provider number, have their name and location so we can look it up for you.
Orthodontics is specialised branch of dentistry that corrects the alignment of teeth using appliances such as bands, braces, and clear aligners like Invisalign.
On most covers that include orthodontics, entitlements start with an opening balance that you can access after you’ve served the 12-month waiting period. Thereafter, the balance is then topped up with an additional amount each 1 January, up to a maximum lifetime limit.
The benefits you receive and how your cover works depend on your level of cover, how long you’ve had it, and the treatment you need. That's why it's a good idea to get in touch with us before you commit to orthodontic treatment. If you’re planning orthodontic treatment for your child, it’s also a great time to make sure that you’re on the best cover for your needs.
