Understanding your hospital eligibility check assessment
Understanding your assessment outcome is an important step in managing your health insurance and ensuring you're covered for the care you need. Whether you're preparing for a procedure or simply reviewing your coverage, this information will help you navigate the eligibility check assessment with confidence and clarity.
The assessment outcome will determine whether we can contribute toward your hospital admission costs. If you're eligible, we will help cover part of the expenses related to your stay, based on your level of cover. The outcome letter will provide further details, including a breakdown of what’s covered. Be sure to review the "Important Information" section of the letter for any additional conditions or requirements related to your hospital admission and coverage.
Hospital eligibility check common terms
We know the hospital eligibility check can include terms that might be unfamiliar, so we’ve put together a simple guide and FAQs to help you understand some of the key terms that may appear in your assessment outcome.
Excess for admission
An excess is an amount that members on certain covers must contribute toward their hospital treatment, in exchange for a lower premium. This includes the following types of hospital charges: accommodation charges (such as bed charges and special care units), theatre fees and labour ward fees.
Per-day payment (or co-payment)
A hospital per-day payment is a capped, daily out-of-pocket expense that members on some hospital covers must pay toward accommodation charges in a private hospital. This is separate to any excess the member has on their product.
Gap cover
GapCover can help you reduce or eliminate the gap on all Medibank Hospital covers for eligible services (excluding Public Hospital covers). If your specialist or specialists participate in GapCover for the claim forming part of your treatment, we will pay an amount higher than 25% of the MBS fee.
Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS)
A list of medical services for which Medicare pays a benefit and the rules that apply to the payment of those benefits. Each service has a fee that has been set by the Australian Government for the purpose of calculating the Medicare benefit payable for that service.
