Enrique has been passionate about running for a long time. In 2012, he found a unique way to share that passion with others – as a guide for vision impaired runners.
“It’s been absolutely great to give back to the sport that I love,” Enrique says. "Achilles Running Club was established in 1996 as a means to help people with disabilities, particularly vision impairment, take part in events and train in a social, safe environment. We welcome vision impaired people from all walks to life to be able to have fun, train and meet new people.
“It’s been an absolute pleasure to become Steven’s friend.”
Every week he trains with Steven, and sometimes they compete in races. They’ve done 10 km races and half marathons together. And over the years of training, the two have become very close, with Steven even attending Enrique’s wedding in May this year.
“It’s been an absolute pleasure to become Steven’s friend – he's a lovely guy,” he says.
Enrique loves the way running makes him feel, and loves that he can help others gain that feeling too. This year at the Sydney Running Festival he ran the full marathon – an excellent preparatory race for the Paris Marathon, which he will be competing in next year.
“The marathon is an absolutely life changing event. I can’t begin to describe the feeling that you get when you cross that finish line.”
Set your goal and go for it – Medibank is proud to sponsor a range of running events across Australia, encouraging everyone to get out there and have a go.
