6 ways to keep your pets safe and happy over Christmas

The festive season can be stressful for the best of us. Keep your pet’s tail wagging with these tips

Written by Medibank

Whether you’re going away for the holidays or you have a busy house full of Christmas festivities, changes in routine can impact your pet’s health and wellbeing. From loud noises to hot temperatures, fewer walks, less supervision and new and potentially dangerous objects around the house, there are a number of things that could cause your pet distress or put them at risk, so it's important to plan ahead.

Check out our top tips for keeping your beloved critters happy and safe over Christmas:

1. Keep wires, decorations and wrappings out of reach

Got a new puppy arriving for Christmas? Clear away any electrical wires that your puppy might be able to reach. These little guys love to chew on wires, which is potentially very dangerous. Check your Christmas decorations and wrappings and put any that could be a hazard out of reach of your pets – you don’t want kitty knocking over candles or your pup choking on a bauble!

2. Hire a petsitter if you’re going away

Friends, family and neighbours can be busy during the holiday season, so a pet sitter can be a great option to make sure your furry friend stays safe and happy while you’re away.

3. Be prepared for the heat

Keep your pet hydrated by making sure their water bowl is constantly topped up during the day, and ensure they have plenty of shade when they’re playing outside. A dog’s body is made up of 70% water, and water is responsible for maintaining a normal body temperature. Check out more tips for keeping your pet cool in summer here.

4. Set up a cosy hideaway

If you have a bustling house over Christmas or live near a fireworks display, give your pet somewhere safe and cosy to escape to if they’re feeling overwhelmed.

5. Keep up your daily walks, even if you’re busy

When dogs are regularly exercised, they are calmer at home and less restless when left alone. For a happy pup, try to fit in at least 30 minutes of walking each day, even when you’re busy. Think of it this way: it’s a chance for you to have some quiet time amongst all the festivities.

6. Don’t let the dogs out!

Guests sometimes neglect to properly shut gates and doors – so make sure your pets are secure and can’t escape your property.
