Why should I get pet insurance for my puppy?
Pet insurance for your puppy can mean that your furry friend is protected if they suffer an illness or injury. The cost of pet healthcare and seeing a vet can often be more expensive than you expect, pet insurance can help ensure that your focus remains on your puppy’s recovery rather than worrying about high out-of-pocket costs.
Insuring your puppy from a young age can be a way to help provide cover for health issues that may come up later in life. There is no public healthcare system for pets, so if something were to happen, the owner has to cover the whole cost.
Is pet insurance worth it for a puppy?
When your new paw-some companion is still a puppy, it’s hard to imagine things going wrong. But prioritising your puppy’s health can start early in their life.
Taking out pet insurance while your puppy is young can help ensure they're covered before any health conditions develop—conditions that might affect their cover later on. Plus, once they're covered, they will be offered policy renewal for life.±

What can Medibank Pet Insurance cover my puppy for?
Pet insurance for your pet is made up of three parts, specified accidental injury cover, illness cover and additional and optional benefits.
Specified accidental injury cover
If your pet has a specified accidental injury, you can be covered if it is a direct result of at least one of the following:
- a motor vehicle incident
- a burn or electrocution
- a reaction to a bite from an insect, spider or scorpion
- a near drowning incident.
Or, it is one of the following:
- a bone fracture
- a traumatic tooth fracture
- snake bite toxicity
- ingestion of a foreign object
- poisoning
- a traumatic ligament or tendon injury
- a bite wound or fight wound abscesses
- lacerations or abrasion of tissue, skin or mucous membrane due to external trauma
- a cruciate ligament condition.4
Illness cover
Your pet can be covered if they suffer an illness, this can include things like:
- skin conditions
- kennel cough
- ear infections
- vomiting and diarrhoea
- arthritis.
It will also include any illness not in the general exclusion section of the PDS.
Additional and optional benefits
This can include items like Routine Care and Extra Care.† Routine Care is a non-insurance benefit and can help provide a contribution towards routine pet care items, you can read more about this here.
