Your Guide to getting the best out of your visit to Thailand
Brace for all kinds of weather
A tropical holiday destination, it goes without saying the general mode of weather in Thailand is hot and steamy. The Andaman coast (west coast) has a monsoon season lasting from April to October; whereas the Gulf of Thailand (east coast) are hit with rain from September to December.
Be visa ready
As an Australian, if you arrive by plane, you do not need to apply for a visa for stays less than 30 days. However, if you arrive in Thailand by land, you are only able to stay in the country without a visa for 15 days
Make sure you're vaccinated up
Before heading to Thailand, ensure your routine vaccinations are up to date at least four weeks before departure. These should include tetanus and diphtheria, whooping cough, polio, measles, mumps and rubella, and chickenpox.
Keep yourself safe
Always watch your drinks when out at a bar, and always stay with friends. You can stay abreast of the situation by visiting the SmartTraveller website.
Avoid drinking water and choose fully-cooked food
The tap water generally isn’t safe to drink, so stick to bottled water. It’s also advisable to avoid raw fruits and vegetables. Instead, opt for fruits that require peeling and fully cooked foods.
Costs for everyone
Thailand can be done on a shoestring budget, making it attractive for backpackers and young couples. However, it also exceeds on the luxury side of things - so if you’re looking for a few weeks of high-class leisure, you’ve come to the right place.
Thinking of riding a scooter in Thailand? Consider additional motorcycle and moped insurance.
Motorcycle, scooter or moped riding can be a great way to get around and see the sights of Thailand. But it’s important to note that any claims involving motorcycle, scooter or moped riding are only included if you add this activity when purchasing your travel insurance policy.
Our terms are simple; we'll help protect you if:
- The engine capacity is 250cc or less
- While in control of a motorcycle or moped, you hold a valid Australian motorcycle licence or Australian motor vehicle driver licence
- While you are a passenger, the driver holds a valid licence, for riding that vehicle
- You are wearing a helmet; not participating in a professional capacity; not racing; and not participating in motocross.
Be prepared to weather the storm
A tropical holiday destination, it goes without saying the general mode of weather in Thailand is hot and steamy. The Andaman coast (west coast) has a monsoon season lasting from April to October; whereas the Gulf of Thailand (east coast) are hit with rain from September to December.
